When I got it in the summer of 2002 the buoy was used, and now in 2009 the rod that passed through the center of the buoy has been worn down from 1/2 inch to a bit under 1/4 inch. The swiveling eye is also substantially worn.
In addition the top of the buoy had a one inch square area knocked out along with some cracks. Last but not least the blue reflective strip has faded substantially.
Here is the buoy all polished with new reflective phone number, blue tape from 3M, and new glass matt over the hole and the cracks near the top under the faded name tag.
A threaded 1/2 inch rod replaced the worn rod. To attach shackles, eye bolts were added at both ends using a rod extension nut that was then cotter keyed with stainless keys to prevent the eye bolt and the long rod from turning loose.
Eye nuts would have been preferred, but were not available. Eye nuts would have kept both joints outside of the buoy and visible for inspection.
