Water pump size for Universal 5432. note from Westerbeke on 17 July 2002 in response to my inquiry as to how much flow I should see from the Oberdorfer pump. .
GOOD MORNING MR. RITTER,
THE FLOW RATE FOR THE OBERDORFER PUMP IS 3 - 3 1/2 GALLONS PER MINUTE AT RATED ENGINE SPEED OF 2800 RPM. I DO NOT HAVE ANY CURVE TO SHOW ME WHAT THE PUMP WILL DO AT VARIOUS ENGINE SPEEDS.
THE CURRENT PUMP USED ON THE UNIVERSAL MODELS DELIVERS APPROXIMATELY 6 - 7 GALLONS PER MINUTE AT RATED ENGINE SPEED.
I AM SURE IT WOULD BE AN IMPROVEMENT OVER WHAT YOUR PRESENT PUMP IS DOING AS FAR AS COOLING.
A KIT IS AVAILABLE TO MOUNT THE CURRENT PUMP ON YOUR ENGINE IN PLACE OF THE OBERDORFER. KIT PART #302837. THE KIT CONTAINS THE NEW PUMP AND MOUNTING HARDWARE.
UNIVERSAL SOME TIME BACK BEFORE WESTERBEKE PURCHASED THE COMPANY INCREASED THE SIZE OF THE HEAT EXCHANGER ON YOUR ENGINE MODEL FROM A 2 INCH DIAMETER TO A 3 INCH. THIS WAS DONE TO IMPROVE COOLING AS WELL.
I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU INSTALL THE KIT CONTAINING THE CURRENT NEW PUMP AND SEE WHAT RESULTS.
BEST REGARDS,
JOE JOYCE
SERVICE MANAGER
Below is a high resolution picture of the Oberdorfer after I removed it. The four M6 studs, that held the two hole to four hole adaptor plate, got there threads mangled when I removed them from the engine block.
pump #301357 (Oberdorfer 202-M15) fitted with impellor #295628 (Oberdorfer impeller 6593)
pump #300986 (Sherwood M-5) fitted with impellor #287439 (Sherwood impeller 10077)
pump #302648 (Sherwood G908) fitted with impellor #302875 (Sherwood impeller 9000)

Click here for a low cost upgrade to the Oberdorfer to double the flow. The following was submitted in Feb 04' by a fellow Universal 5432 owner:
After poking around some more I have found another alternative that I think I will try before replacing the Oberborfer with the G908.
I believe the pump on my engine is a Oberdorfer M202-3 (yet to be confirmed by inspection). This can be upgrade to a M202-7 by changing the cam that distorts the impeller.
The cam is easily changed, costs only $12, and the pump output is doubled. I still like the G908 better (easier impeller change and no hokey grease cup), but the cam change is so simple and cheap I have to try that first.
Check it out here http://www.moyermarine.com/upgrade.htm
The cam is also available at Depco Pump, part #6592
Here is a good data sheet for the Oberdorfer pumps.

Original, short 1/4-20 screw. Mine pulled out two threads the first time I replaced the impeller.
Longer 1/4-20 screw worked for now..
