My pick-up buoy lost its boyant part when a batch of weeds came through and ripped it off.   I find that the boat hook works just fine particularly when the dingy is in place.  It is a challange with no dinghy in place.

Click here for a close up on the wear of the original 1/2" Swivel that was located right at the buoy (makes for easy inspection).  I never trusted this swivel so the mooring pennant was attached to the swivel loop closest to the chain during the 02', 03', and 04' season.  It sure did twist up badely on occassion.
This is how I hooked up my mooring pendent to the larger 5/8" Swivel at the start of the 05' season.  It can be seen that the swivel that came with the buoy has a head that is not much thicker than a nickel and would never be suitable for holding a boat in a strong wind for very long.  That is why you never hook a boat's pendent up to the buoy.

There are locking wires on all three clevises two are the solid stainless steel type with a diameter of about 0.050” so they are hard to see in the picture.

The 5/8” swivel is considerably heavier than the ½” swivel and makes the buoy go about 2 inches deeper into the water.
